Today we cross over into Armenia. As with any border, things feel like they change immediately, architecture, food, faces, clothing. It’s amazing to me that so much can change in a matter of 100m.
Yesterday as we weaved further south, we hit a bit of rain. It’s not a surprise that we’ve finally had some wet weather, some of the areas we are travelling through receive between 1500-2500mm per year! No wonder the gardens look like they’re growing cms per day!
On our way through towards to border we stopped at a town called Borjomi, famous for its healing waters. The Romanovs built a holiday house in the area and developed the mineral waters in the late 1800’s. The water tastes terrible (quite sulphuric!) but is meant to heal stomach issues! Borjomi is a spring water company here in Georgia, so they clearly treat the waters before they sell it!
Yesterday we arrived in Akhaltsikhe, a city in the Lesser Caucuses. Literally named “Newcastle” in Georgian, the original castle fortress was built in the 9th century, it has been partially destroyed and rebuilt ever since. The most recent restoration happening in 2011-12. Our accommodation last night was within the palace walls, which was a truly unique place to stay!
Today we are off to Armenia, and a change of language that I am sure will challenge our tongues!
