Exploring northern Portugal

For our first few days in northern Portugal, we based ourselves in the tiny seaside village of Caminha, for two reasons:

  1. If we are setting up the tent, it should be for more than one night
  2. When we packed down in Playa de la Arnia, it was raining hard and the tent needs some time to dry out!

Caminha was an interesting challenge of a place to be, because we were so close to the Spanish border, our phones and watches kept randomly switching time zones, consequently we were rarely confident as to what the time actually was!

We were by the beach in Caminha, which was lovely, cause you could hear the Atlantic rolling in from the tent, but boy that water was COLD!

Atlantic…. A bit chilly!

We took a day trip to an inland city called Bagra. It was a much quieter place than what we were used to, as it seems tourists stick to the coast. But it was really cool to see the immediate difference in Portuguese style towns to Spain.

We headed up to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, which is a UNESCO world heritage listed site that is famous for its multiple staircases and unusual design (in all 573 steps).

We will be heading down towards Porto in the next few days and then finally on towards Lisbon for the finale of the trip 🙁.
