Sweating it out in Split

To say landing at Split Harbour in the morning was chaos (organised they tell me!), is an understatement! The boat did indeed start up its engines at 5am…. Which was a bit rude after our farewell dinner the night before in Milna!

Most of the weekly tour boats offload and on-load on a Saturday, which means all hell is breaking loose on the docks. Passengers are being off loaded, their luggage is being tanker off in dingies, all linen and rubbish is being taken off the boats, transfers are picking up passengers, all the food and linen and supplies for the next 7 day trip is being put on the boats. Chaos!

Split was heating up and it wasn’t even 10am yet. I dropped my bags off at the accommodation and went exploring.

Split Old Town is very similar to Dubrovnik (don’t tell them I said that!). An UNESCO world heritage site, the Palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian was build in 293AD. The Cathedral of Saint Domnius is the longest operating Catholic Church and still takes services today. And just like it’s cousin down the road, it was heaving with people!

The day was heating up and the old town was fast losing places to hide from the sun and the people. I got thoroughly lost several times and started to have deja vu as I am sure I was going past all the same places! Split is another

Town that much of age series Game Of Thrones was filmed in. How they managed it, with all the travellers, I don’t know!

People’s Square or Pjaca, the old town hall is the new looking building in the middle was part of a larger structure which was knocked down in 1825, the town hall was renovated in 1890

Now some of my photos look void of people, they are, because I got up early on Sunday for a tour and took them…. Clearly the best time to view these amazing cities is at around 6am!

By around 12, I was melting and it was time to get out of the Old Town. Check in wasn’t until 2pm, so I found a stone bench in the shade in a garden and people watched 2 hours away!

You can see how small the alley ways are in Split, they have these excellent little motorised trucks that they stand in the front of and operate like a scissor lift to ferry in all of the supplies needed for the shops, restaurants, hotels etc. Because they are electric, they can tend to sneak up on you, so you do need to keep an ear out for them!

Diocletian’s Cellars, must have been great when they were full of wine not people!!

Once 2pm hit, I was in my room, doing some essential washing and having a much needed shower! It’s all un-exciting stuff, but the essentials of travelling!

I took myself off for a late lunch around 5pm (they gave us so much food on the boat that I didn’t really get hungry until around 3:30pm). And then had a beer on the harbour and watched all the beautiful people go by.

It was off to bed early, because of 5am boat engines, Captain’s Farewell Dinner, generally steamy Split and I have a tour to get up for early in the morning!
