The tiny lanes of Coastal Cornwall

Having got up early, we decided that we would just meander along the coast and find what we could find along the way. This part of Cornwall is where you’ll find Rick Stein’s flagship Padstow restaurants, Port Isaac (Of Doc Martin fame, and Fisherman’s Friends fame) and just stunning little lanes, towns and fishing villages.

We headed up the coast of Porthcothan to check out the beach scene and get in some lovely little coastal walks. Porthcotan was super busy and everyone was in the sea, like mad men! It wasn’t that hot, 15 degrees, but they were all in there, getting their swim on!! I guess it is summer holidays and the locals are getting their sunny beach time in where they can! We took our bathers on this drive, but it certainly wasn’t the weather for either of us to even consider dipping a toe in!!

It was during this meandering that we came across some of the tightest lanes that Lesley had ever seen! Our favourite was at a place called Port Quin, which was a tight tiny community of 5 or 6 houses at the bottom of a gully. You can only hope that 100 years ago they all liked each other a lot! These days, the town looks like it’s all holiday let.

We took costal walks out from Port Quin, before stopping at Port Isaac for lunch.

Lesley had a night booked at the Minack Theatre, which is this stunning outdoor theatre and the cliffs at the bottom of Penzance. The weather held out, which was amazing! We saw “Street Car Named Desire”….. great location, odd play!

We will shortly be making the haul up to Wales and Snowdonia, which is the opportunity to climb Mount Snowdon.
